With Easter weekend and Passover having just passed, a thought occurred to me while driving back to school. How can professors assign work over a holiday like Easter? It's simply just unfair. No, this is not just a college girl whining about doing work on a weekend. It's not that wrong to say homework on an important event is hard to do. Here's why.
It's no secret that a lot of college students tend to go home over weekends like Easter or for other holidays that are celebrated and not given proper breaks for. It's a family event, and many students like to spend that time with their families. That being said, many college students only see their families a handful of times every year. How can it be expected to do an extensive homework assignment when a student is lucky enough to see their family for the first time in weeks?
I understand completely that a professor needs to continuously move forward with the material, and it is hard to not assign homework for a whole weekend. But is there no sympathy? There are definitely ways to go about giving one weekend off.
After asking my professor if our assignment was actually due on Easter Sunday, he responded by saying that we have the entire weekend to do it and that it can be done in the days before Easter. While that is valid, a lot of students still are home with their families for those days as well. So now instead of spending time with family and potentially doing things that might have needed to be done at home, or prepping for the holiday, I have to sit there and do work? It just feels wrong.
I am not trying to criticize or attack professors who assign homework over holidays in any way, I am just trying to be heard. I really find doing a project on a weekend I explicitly planned to spend time with my family extremely inconvenient. Being stuck at school for virtually nine months out of the year, I already feel like I am missing out on cherished moments with my family. Please don't make me feel like I am missing out on more when I'm cooped up in my room at home working on your assignment.
