I am a dreamer. I am an individual who longs for the future and lives in the pursuit of happiness. I believe that our success in life is not determined by wealth, beauty and stance in the social ladder of society, but it is merely the point in our individual lives where our happiness is so rich and so pure that we cannot be uprooted by loss, pain and struggle; but strengthened by the obstacles that could make us weak and vulnerable. I am convinced that in order to reach success, we must dream. We must envision and strive for what will make us feel whole and content. With a clear mind, full heart and a passion for your goals and dreams, you will reach triumph; then nothing can take you down.
Since the beginning of civilization, being “successful” was deemed as someone with striking beauty, popularity among society and one who has attained a mass amount of wealth. Those who strive for goals like these are considered materialistic; whereas, those who aspire to a more meaningful, illuminated life are spiritualistic. There is an unhealthy balance between these two lifestyles. Millions of people ignore the spiritualistic qualities in life, such as being in tune with yourself, building relationships and strengthening faith, which in the absence of these qualities leads to an empty, unfulfilling life. Why strive for a materialistic life held together by dollar bills when you have the blessing and opportunity to live for something more grand and meaningful? Those who live a spiritualistic life shine; they are radiant, strong, beautiful lights that burn with a contagious passion. I applaud those who live for something greater than the standard and expectation for success.
From the perspective of a modern-day college student, the pressures and push to “make it big” in the world are intimidating and can be extremely discouraging. When I was younger I used to picture myself living life as Barbie does: taking on career after career, living in the most vibrant house on the block, and driving the pink convertible. I imagined the handsome man who will never lose his defined muscle tone, and having enough clothes to open a consignment shop. Unfortunately, as we age, reality sinks in; sometimes it hits us more abruptly than we could ever prepare for. Once I reached high school, I realized just how much stress students burden themselves with, due to the fact that they don’t feel they are smart enough, pretty enough, strong enough, cool, funny, bold enough to make a difference in the world, or to be successful. We are all dreamers, but it is those who build confidence and grasp the importance of self-worth who will begin their path to spiritual success.
I believe that struggle leads to strength and dreams lead to greatness. We tend to set goals that please the public, but at what point do we realize that in the end, success is not about your relationship with society? What it comes down to is the family you cared for, the friends you laughed with, the strangers you spoke to, the adventures you dared to take, the ideas you fought for and the dreams you were in pursuit of. How do you want your success story told? How will you be remembered? Emerge yourself into a life filled with unconditional love and happiness! Let the insecurities simmer and the boldness roar. Hand over your fears to the one whose love is stronger than a hurricane and grace vaster than the oceans. I trust in a God who has an unimaginable plan for every individual. “Delight yourself also in the LORD: and he shall give you the desires of your heart (Psalms 37:4).” Trust in Him and his plan for you. Do not live your days in fear of the future but anticipation for what beautiful things there are to come.
We are all dreamers. Imagine a world where we can aspire for something greater than wealth, power and popularity. I encourage you to dream and trust that God will take the reins of your future. Dare to live passionately! Live through Him, live through the people you love, the people you have empathy for; let your perfect imperfections show without shame; make mistakes again and again; open your heart and mind to new ideas, higher goals and boundless dreams, for there is no limit to spiritualistic success.
