What the Future Holds

Aspirations For the Future

2016 was a horrible year. The world lost many talented people. We also suffered a terrible election that split the country in two. If you're like me, you also experienced personal losses in 2016. It's been an excruciating year, one that many people wish they could forget. It's been a year full of loss, controversy, and disagreements. After this year, we need to start looking forward towards the future. Here are some of my most important aspirations for the future. Your aspirations might be different. Use this list to try and come up with your own list of aspirations.

1. College Graduation:

College graduation is definitely something I look forward to. I'm only a freshman, but it feels as if my first semester of college flew by faster than lightning. I'll be attending my second semester of college in a little less than a month. I'm extremely excited to attend my classes. Even though finals week is a killer, I definitely enjoy the overall learning experience. My school's curriculum feels very immersive. I can't wait to get deeper into my major. The classes are exciting and new. I can't wait to take them in the future. I'm looking forward to having all that information in my brain one day.

2. Travel:

Another thing I aspire for in the future is to travel. My school has a lot of opportunities for travel. These opportunities include The Magellan Project, Intersession, and a semester of study abroad. I'm hoping to do at least two Magellan Projects and one Intersession that is abroad. There are so many places I'd love to see. I will take every opportunity my school has to offer. I also hope to one day travel on my own once I establish a career.

3. Graduate School:

I aim to one day go to graduate school. I'm not sure what graduate school I want to go to or for what yet; hopefully, I'll make up my mind before I graduate. A future after graduation is a great thing to look forward to. Whether you want to go to graduate school or not, it's always an available option. I cannot see myself going directly into a career after graduation. I would like to go as far as I possibly can in my major or in a related field.

4. Establishing a Career:

Another thing I look forward to is establishing a career. Some of you may want to establish your careers directly after graduation. I'd rather wait until after graduate school, but it's still a prospect in my future that I'm highly anticipating. If you're an undergraduate student you can obviously aspire for a career as well. We'll all take different paths, but ultimately this is the goal. It's what all college students set out to achieve. We all want to achieve a career that we're happy with and that makes money. The best way to do this is to follow what interests us in undergraduate school to anywhere it leads us. It'll lead us all in different directions. Our journey will definitely change along the way. It won't always lead to where we originally anticipated. We'll change our plans as our interests change, but we'll all ultimately achieve our dreams as long as we keep trying.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
