I Asked 10 People Why They Consider Themselves Feminists And Here's What They Said

It's important for people to realize that feminism is a part of everyone's lives, and not just specified down to a certain sample of people.

With all of the blurred and biased talk around feminism, I thought that it would be important to get people's opinions about why they're feminists. I happen to know quite a few of them, and I admit I was raised in a very feminism-oriented household.

My mom was the main income, and my dad retired around the time I started elementary school. A working mom has been everything that I have ever known and modeled myself after, and my father supports my mom and me in every decision and idea that we have.

While I know that not everyone was raised the way that I was, I thought that it would be important to highlight different people's opinions that did not just come from a house that has a picture of Barack Obama and his family on the fridge, and an upbringing quite as liberal and feminist as I was.

So, all of that being said, I decided to go around and ask 10 people why they consider themselves to be a feminist.

Here were their answers:

1. "I want to be responsible for my life and money."

Age: 23

Gender: Female

Major: Early Childhood Education

2. "I'm sick and tired of men being in practically all positions of importance. Women deserve equal pay for equal work to their male counterparts."

Age: 78

Gender: Female

Work: Retired Elementary School Education

3. "I don't think women should be oppressed and that we can do and wear and say whatever the fuck we want."

Age: 20

Gender: Female

Major: Art

4. "I believe in men and women having equal opportunities and rights."

Age: 19

Gender: Male

Major: Criminal Justice

Minor: Psychology

5. "Because all humans should have access to the same opportunities regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, or race and ethnic identity. As a woman, I reject the rape culture and sexual pressures around me and victim blaming that occurs. I want my future children to grow up and not have to face assault, abuse, or gender discrimination."

Age: 22

Gender: Female

Major: Social Work

6. "Because I believe everyone deserves equality, and because I'm fucking sick of the patriarchy."

Age: 56

Gender: Female

Work: Retired Superintendent

7. "Men and women deserve equal rights because they deserve to have a say in what they do with their body. The brain is not gendered. They are of equal intelligence, so why is one treated in a different way?"

Age: 19

Gender: Male

Major: Criminal Justice

Minor: History

8. "Because as a woman, I can be paid less than a man."

Age: 21

Gender: Female

Major: English

9. "It means that men and women are equal and that's because, as a woman, I won't have to give up things because of my gender such as the amount I get paid, the way I dress, or how I treat my body. It means that if I choose to have a baby I don't have to give up my secondary education and everything I've worked for just to be able to care for my baby while my husband gets to do all the things he wants."

Age: 18

Gender: Female

Major: Sociology

10. "Because I have the greatest respect for the wonderful women in my life."

Age: 71

Gender: Male

Major: Retired Vocational Education Teacher
(It's my dad)

While the last one might be biased considering it's my dad and my mom and me are his two favorite people, I felt like getting opinions from people that are both younger and older was important for my article. It just comes to show that feminism is for everybody, regardless of gender and age.

It's important for people to realize that feminism is a part of everyone's lives, and not just specified down to a certain sample of people.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
