Christmas time is my favorite part of the year. We’re on break from school and we get to visit with our family and friends. This year, it seems, that all anyone wants to ask me about is my sorority. It’s as if people are buying into the stereotype that once you’re involved in a sorority that is the only thing you’re involved in. While I love my sorority and my sisters and I am so proud to be a Theta, an integral part of being a Greek woman is involvement in other organizations on campus. Thetas are leading women, and in order to lead, we must be able to do so, in our sorority and beyond.
This year, I am involved in several other organizations on campus including the Exploratory Studies Student Council, of which I am the president; Service Raleigh, an organization that organizes a huge day of service; Technician, the student newspaper of NC State; and Cru, a Christian organization at NC State. I also hold two jobs while taking 15 to 22 credit hours each semester.
Theta does take up a considerable amount of time, but I love every second I get to spend with my sisters. Whether we’re out serving or gathered in the living room of the Theta house for chapter dinner, they bring out the best in me and I cherish the time I spend with them.
I work hard to give 100 percent to everything that I do, Theta and other organizations included. This year when we are sitting around the dinner table or having a casual conversation, I challenge you to ask me about something other than my sorority. Ask me about a job, ask me about student council, ask me how my internship with the Odyssey is going, or about my major.
Please don’t just assume that my campus involvement ends with my sorority. That’s only where it begins.
