Let's talk about squatting. Why? Because I have a challenge for you.
Have you ever noticed when an adult wants to get on the same level as a child they'll squat but lift their heels off the ground and put the weight in their toes? This is called the Western Squat.
Or when you go to the gym and see people squat, but their butt never touches their ankles?
Well, allow me to introduce you to the Asian Squat.
What exactly is that you ask?
Well, allow me to explain…
The Asian Squat is when your feet are shoulder width apart and firmly on the ground, you then squat down to where your butt touches your ankles. The Asian Squat isn't too commonly seen, in fact, the only time I've ever seen it really done is in Yoga classes. In Yoga classes, it's called the Yogui Squat, but is a little different as the legs are spread wider apart.
The name of this squat leaves some people to believe only Asian people can do this. Do I believe only Asian’s can do this? No. It’s just a funny trend I found online and wanted to share. The Asian Squat simply takes practice.
Now, aside from just being a fun challenge, the Asian Squat is quite beneficial as well. If you've ever been to China or know anything about the culture, you know their bathrooms are very different than ours. Their bathrooms consist of a hole in the ground as a toilet, this is because when going to the bathroom in China they do the Asian Squat for better bowel movements. This form improves bowel movements because your organs are in a straight alignment which helps with a more natural "flow of business". In addition, the Asian Squat helps with flexibility and helps strengthen muscles such as the thighs, calves, and hamstrings! Lastly, it helps with posture centering gravity above your feet!
So, now I challenge you, the reader, to try the Asian Squat! Can you do it? Give it a go!
