"God, all millennials are the same: expecting everything to just be handed to them by chance, thinking that they deserve the world without doing a lick of work."
This is our label. This is what a millennial is defined as according to our society. Every generation has flaws and likes to pick on each other. However, millennials seem to be the butt of every joke.
What is a "typical millennial," though? The definition of a millennial is an individual born after 1977 but before 2000. That's it. Nowhere does it say that we are defined as being lazy or underachievers, because not every single one of us sits around doing nothing all day.
There are plenty of successful millennials out there writing novels and coming up with creative and innovated inventions and ideas. Whether people see it or not, we are just making our mark in ways that weren't possible 20 years ago. We are asking the hard questions and answering them with a new approach. Yes, I would agree that we open our mouths, thinking that whatever we say is fool-proof and then maybe getting butt hurt when we get criticism. But it's a process: get your feelings hurt so that you can reevaluate and come up with an alternative approach. Just because we have a different approach, doesn't mean that it's wrong. No one likes being told that they are wrong, it's a learning experience for us all, and not just one for millennials.
Another stereotype of millennials is that they are materialistic, especially when it comes to technology. Honestly, that's where the whole world is headed — into this era where technology and materials determine your worth. Now-a-days, if you can't work an iPad or tablet, it makes you look like you are outdated. It's a skill to know how to work with the newest technology. That's where the future is going anyway! Every business, every organization, needs someone proficient in technology. Most businesses can't function without technology. We are simply developing our skills and building our resumes.
Don't get me wrong, there are some millennials that fit all these stereotypes, but I'm tired of being dismissed because of my generation's bad reputation, when I have worked hard for everything I have earned and every opportunity I have come across. We shouldn't be ashamed to be millennials. We are simply trying to keep up with our developing culture and society. We are all not the same. We are individuals and should be treated as such. Stop putting us all in the same mold, because we don't all fit.
