It's rarely easy being a woman.
In fact, I'd say being a woman is one of the hardest jobs an individual can have, especially in today's society. We are stereotyped and stigmatized. We are hated. Degraded. We become the brunt of jokes and our attempts to validate ourselves are cast off because we are "too emotional."
I'm here to call bullshit. Women are not here to make you a sandwich. We are not here to cook dinner, to wash clothes or idly sit back while men get all the credit. Woman are so much more than their stereotypical 50's portrayal. We aren't meant to wear aprons and pearls every day. In fact, I'd argue that we don't have to wear them ever.
Now, there's no denying the progress women have made over the past few decades. We have leaped forward, conquering the world one by one, climbing up business ladders and making ourselves known. We have fought long and hard for our rights, and yet, we are still laughed at. We are still cast aside.
In my recent Leadership Psychology course, we talked about how women hold more degrees at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Women are seen as being more successful in transformational leadership positions, and they establish strong communities in their fields. However, men still hold more positions in management and as CEOs. Men are viewed as being, overall, more successful than women, despite the fact that there has been little data collected to support such a notion.
Women are looked past because society has taught us that we are "weak" and "vulnerable." We are still viewed as sex objects, as individuals who need protecting, as a prize or a trophy to our breadwinning significant other. These prejudices are detrimental to women's progress. We deserve to be recognized as being valid and worthy. We deserve equality.
So, no, world, we are not angry because we are on our period. Not all of us want to have kids. We don't only enjoy the fruity alcoholic drinks. We are strong both emotionally and physically. Our genitalia does not dictate our physical and intellectual abilities, so stop pretending it does.
