Since mid-February many have been anxiously waiting for April the giraffe to give birth. On April 15th, 2017, viewers around the world were finally able to watch the birth. In fact, there was an around the clock livestream catching her every move. However, multiple events occurred during this two-month period. As a society that is glued to our screen, were we aware of all these moments?
1. February 12, 2017 – Emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, California threatens to collapse
About 180,000 residents were ordered to evacuate. The evacuation was due to a large hole being discovered in an emergency spillway, which is used to catch excess water when Lake Oroville’s levels rise.
2. March 2, 2017 – US Attorney General Jeff Sessions recuses himself from the investigation of President Trump’s campaign contacts with Russia
Jeff Sessions recused himself from the investigation when it was discovered he had met with the Russian ambassador. During his Senate confirmation hearing he had failed to disclose two pre-election meetings with Russia’s ambassador to Washington. At the time, Moscow was accused of interfering with the presidential race.
3. March 3, 2017 – Mass grave of 800 children and infants confirmed at a former Catholic care home in Tuam, Ireland.
4. April 1, 2017 – Bob Dylan receives his Nobel Prize for literature at a private ceremony in Stockholm.
5. April 2, 2017 – Muslim shrine attacked by a custodian and others in Sargodha, Pakistan.
This attack claimed the lives of 20 civilians.
6. April 4, 2017 – A chemical weapon attack on Khan Sheikhoun, Syria.
This attack was led out by the Syrian government and claimed the lives of more than 80 civilians.
7. April 5, 2017 – Pepsi pulls their controversial ad featuring Kendall Jenner.
After being criticized for trivializing demonstrations, Pepsi pulled their new ad.
8. April 7, 2017 – US military launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian military airfield.
This was the first direct military involvement by the US since this six-year long war has begun. The Syrian military base attacked was the allegedly the one responsible for the chemical attacks. This attack claimed the lives of 8 civilians.
