One Semester Down, Seven Semesters To Go

I can’t even remember what I did for the last three months.

One down, seven more, let’s go.

People say that college changes you and is a huge adjustment, and boy are they right. Growing up and thinking about how old I would eventually be, I cannot believe that my first semester of college is basically over. It feels like just yesterday that I was crying in my friends’ and parents’ arms saying my goodbyes. It’s crazy to think about how fast the time went; I can’t even remember what I did for the last three months. All I know is that I really enjoyed these past few months of my new life.

Although college can take some preparation, I do not believe that one can fully prepare themselves for the new chapter of their life. Everyone’s experience is different, therefore there’s not any one proper or perfect way to prepare for change.

Things that have changed for me are:

1. My Study Habits

Compared to high school, I study for hours upon hours at college. Studying for my exams makes me feel better about myself because I can confidently say that I put in the effort even if I do not do as well as I wished.

2. Outlook On Life

My dad has always told me to stay in the moment and enjoy every second, and I have definitely practiced that philosophy more at college. The days, weeks and months go by so quickly; I cannot believe how fast the time goes. As I normally enjoy everything, I have learned to be less of a worry wart and enjoy every second.

3. Balance

College can so easily make you forget about the little important things and make you only focus on parties, making friends or fitting in with everyone. Balancing your college life between school work, people you meet, getting involved and going out makes the entire college experience.

4. Time Management

Prior to college I would do work and get things done either last minute or right away, but I have learned to get my work done at a good pace to be able to maintain my studies.

Fortunately for me, I loved my first semester of college and would not change anything about it. To all high schoolers, enjoy your high school experience because, in a blink of an eye, it’ll be over. Part of me even wishes that I could go back to the easiness of high school. Here’s to the next seven semesters of college.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
