Sunny days beg my body to take a seat on my campus' quad to soak in the rays and open my ears to the conversations happening all around me. Different sound waves travel through my ear canals and make me realize how unique and different everyone around me is. I had noticed perhaps an 8 or 9-year-old child laid out on her stomach coloring on a piece of paper with her mom laying right beside her. It brought back memories of when I squealed with excitement when my parents brought home a box of crayons.
The 6-year-old me felt powerful that I could collect pieces of paper all around my house and fill them with bursts of colors and images. As a colorful minded 6-year-old, I have always asked for a box of freshly sharpened crayons that had its distinct aroma of vanilla and all things crafty. Little did I know that years later, I would look at the same sixty-four box of crayons in a completely new light sitting on my campus's quad.I told you I am sucker for finding meaning within little things in my last article and here I am again.
I realized that colors have this magical ability to be individualistic within their shades, yet be adaptable in the creation of coming together and producing vivid images filled with thought and precision. It is this inclusiveness that would inspire me to paint “ As Crayons we Unite” on every corner of the world.
These Crayola stamped wax figures represent people today I thought. Everyone is lost in this progressive society that constantly begs for passengers to hop on the train of individualism, that being able to create the sixty-four piece Crayola box–that has the potential to create rainbow after rainbow- is next to impossible.
“As Crayons we Unite” would remind the community that though we are the products of different reactants, at the end of the day we should all strive to be like the tinted pigment sticks that live in the same box practicing the notion of pluralism. This world has the ability to come together and live within cosmopolitan ethics and that is one hope I am not willing to give up. Struggles, racism, and acts of terror are widespread but if everyone was just to realize the power of unity and acceptance- this world would be a lot more colorful filled with beautiful images.
