The Art of Napping

Giving yourself a couple minutes of shut-eye might make you more productive.

The Art of Napping

At one point or another, everyone has experienced the grueling pain of staying awake after an unsatisfying night of sleep. Whether you had to scramble to finish a school project or clock in an extra shift at work, you weren't able to rest for the full recommended eight hours. With body aches and fatigue pulling at your eyelids, even sitting upright becomes an exhausting task the following day.

As an adult with responsibilities to tend to, you can't just drop everything and call it a night at 2:00pm when the coffee starts to wear off. Rather, you can opt to take a power nap.

Not only do naps reduce fatigue, but they also improve mood and performance. In fact, they've been proven to decrease reaction time and enhance memory. Thus, it would be more productive to re-energize by napping than to push through assignments fighting for consciousness.

Now that we've established the benefits of napping, how can you effectively nap?

If you simply need a boost in energy, a short power nap would be the best strategy. Try to keep it under thirty minutes to avoid the crippling effects of sleep inertia. Most experts recommend napping earlier in the afternoon to avoid difficulties sleeping during the nighttime, preferably before 4:00pm.

Now that you've determined the length and time of your nap, find a location that would be comfortable for you to rest in. A dark and quiet spot would be ideal, preferably with a bed or a couch. If this isn't available in your current setting, just putting your head down on your desk with some headphones normally does the trick.

Before heading back to work after your nap, make sure to give yourself a couple minutes to reorient and allow your body to fully wake up. To maximize the refreshing effects of a power nap, try drinking a caffeinated drink just before you go to sleep. Whether it's coffee or soda, the caffeine will kick in around half an hour later (around when you wake up) and leave you feeling energized and ready to tackle your workload.

Thus, next time you catch yourself dozing off at your desk, try taking a quick power nap instead of trying to fight the fatigue. Happy napping!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
