How often do you get on Facebook or Instagram and see some adorable photo of two girls laughing to each other who appear not to notice a picture was being taken? How often do you think the girls actually don't know that the picture was being taken?
It's a rare occasion with Instagram becoming more and more of a popular social media source for candid photos to actually be candid. Now the question is, How do girls manage to get such great candid photos that actually look candid?
With formal recruitment being around it means taking lots of photos. While I watched pictures being taken during recruitment I took notice on how people enacted "candid" ones. If you want to take a really good candid photo you have a couple options.
Firstly, there's the ever popular option of just having the photographer continuously snap photos as you begin to pose for a picture. Most of the time this just ends with pictures of arms being flown around and people making weird faces.
Another option is purposely posing and fake laughing or smiling at each other. This can create some great results or can just result in pictures of girls making very pained faces that are just uncomfortable to look at.
That leaves us with probably the best option, which is to find a friend who just snaps random pictures left and right throughout the day. While these tend to actually be more candid it means you're gonna end up with a lot of pictures to sort through. Also, that friend will regret doing it because she'll end up with fomo and probably never upload them to any social media outlet.
Now I'm not making fun of posed "candid" photos. I love them, in fact, and sometimes they do look really cute. However, if you're going to Instagram it, please just don't make it look like you spent hours capturing the perfect one and make it look natural. Otherwise, even if you are in my sorority or my best friend, I will refuse to throw a "like" your way.
