No, my major is not all fun and games
Looking back, it was what I considered risky to pick Creative Writing for a major. The career aptitude tests measured something in journalism. Sure, journalism is an honorable thing to go into but I always enjoyed creativity. My brain thrived on the stories and poems that I made inside of my head.
Today I can't picture myself doing anything else.
Campus is a huge place. I've been here for two years and I've managed to strike small-talk conversations with just about everybody who's ever ridden an elevator with me.
Usually, the story goes like this. I ask them how their day is going, they usually mention some class they're about to head to or some project their working on. I then go an ask them what their major is. When they tell me, they usually ask for mine.
But when I tell them mine. I'm met with a…
"Oh, that sounds like so much fun!"
Last year, I took this as a compliment. Yes, my major is fun. I get to do what I love for grades and I also get to take fun classes on top of all the English classes I have to take.
I've come to realize, that it's not all fun and games. By now the line between my passion and my academic career have blurred.
Homework never really ends with me. Sure, I may have all my ducks in a line. I finished my two-page paper on the film I watched in Film History and I read everything that I needed to for my LGBTQ+ Studies class. I read everything and done all the homework, but it never ends.
Along with that I also write, I write poetry that will be heavily edited with all my blood sweat and tears to get rejected by Literary magazines and journals alike. I drag myself to the library for tutoring and coaching. I also try and have some fun while I'm at it. I am constantly working on my 'craft' as well as trying to learn the importance of Sigmund Freud on the history of Psychology.
Art majors (creative writing, film, art, digital art, glass etc. ) are not a walk in the park. We decided to take the thing we decided we liked to do in high school and try to make a career out of them. We are learning how to have fun in our work and not let our work turn into something so mundane we hate it.
No, I'm not saying it's all work. It can be fun. An art major is not fun all the time.
