“Art is when you hear a knocking from your soul — and you answer.” ~Terri Guillemets

The investigations of the past years of human existence show the importance of any form of Art, even at the days when people were walking with the stones in their hands. Many of you would not even think that those stones, transformed into weapon, were the first attempts to give any object a secondary meaning. At that time people could not even think of calling it “art”, they were doing all sorts of different things just to survive, which now can be viewed by us, independent audience, as a form of Art.
Thus since people weren’t thinking of art back then, let us talk about art now. What is art for you, and for me, and for everyone else.
No matter how hard I try, I cannot find a complete explanation of what is called art. When I see something that fascinates me and when I feel my stomach crawling with undefined feelings - that is the time when the word "art" sparkles in my imagination. For example, the works of Yasuaki Onishi, a young Japanese artist who works with installations, sculpture and painting. He uses mixed materials for his works, such as tree brunches, glue and urea. His sculptures may seem abstract and undefined, but I guess this is one of the reasons people feel captivated and frozen looking at his installation.

When I first came across Yasuaki Onishi in the Language of Art class I was amazed just by the way it looked like. However when I did my small research, I understood why it keeps attracting me every time I look at it. His installations are totally different and totally unpredictable. Another space, another world, another message, another vision.... Just like a little universe, where you feel empty and full at the same time.

The example above can introduce art as being an another dimension. Space where everything else doesn’t exist. Everything we are so used to is vanished or transformed. That is why it is complete freedom. That is why people are debating over art pieces again and again. Because it is so contrasting from the causality that it evolves different opinions, feelings and emotions, and you wouldn’t find two people that would say the same thing about one piece.
Me, you and millions of people asked themselves what is art at least once. Not everyone could find an answer because it takes a lot of time to start recognizing something as an art. But that is until you find your own form of art. Then you start seeing it everywhere, like Yasuaki Onishi started looking at the shapes of tree branches and decided to underline the presence of aesthetics and beauty in the gifts of nature.
So open your eyes, take a deep breath and look around you. Because Art might be present in your life. Because art is what you see, and things you see can become an art anytime. Art is life, life is art.
