Art Is Alive

A Focus on Poetry.

Art Is Alive
Balzac's Coffee Shop

Sorry;

A word

Witnessed

Through eyes

Sewing into Hearts

Of tasteful desperation

Travelling unheard paths

Dragged behind tiptoes

Prancing upon strings

Of memory, weaving

In and out and In

and out

of

Consciousness.

Yesterday?

Today?

Tomorrow?

Away Will songs of sting

fall sang in peace-

ful tunes.

Scraping against ears

No more For ears exist

Only in sorrow

And Tears Will No Longer

Become a drink To the dry Sahara

Consuming tongues

tripping under thoughts.

When I think of beauty, I think of elegance, grace, silky, pale perfection, vividness. When I think of beauty, there are some things that are obvious to the name, but beauty is more than the obvious. Beauty is exquisite, in perfection and in imperfections. It's simple to see flawlessness and call it beautiful, but to find beauty in the dark and hidden, is true beauty. Poetry is the definition of true beauty.

Poetry is the perfect balance of the obvious and the hidden beauty. It is elegant and graceful, tracing are lips as we recite it's alluring words, although it contains the voice of broken hearts and soaring minds. Poetry is an art form that may not be very important today, but we mustn't let it be forgotten of its beauty that inspires the broken and old souls of today.

The poem above was one written by myself. I use poetry for the same reason as many others: A release, a love, and a reflection.

A Release

Poetry is like medication for the mind. It's a perfect way to take all of the feelings and thoughts you don't understand and write them down, exactly like that: with feeling and nonsensical thoughts. The wonderful thing about poetry is how artistic and creative you can make it. You can make up words that don't exist and give them a meaning that will make sense to not only you, but your readers too. I wrote the poem above because I was dangerously depressed and it was eating me alive, but whomever reads my poem can connect for a different reason, or the same. You're exposing yourself and clearing your head, without completely uncovering your secrets.

A Love

Poetry is passion. It's a love for language, writing, story, and creativity. It's a love for the history of previous writers, and the love of understanding people, and finding yourself. I've always believed that humans are living for love. Life would be nothing if we did not love something or someone. Without love, we feel nothing, we become nothing, and we create nothing. Love is sometimes terrifying, but embrace love and pain, and embrace art. Embrace tragic beauty and change your life incredibly.

A Reflection

I recently began reading a book titled Flow by (Caution: Avoid attempting to pronounce name) Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. His book is focused around controlling the self consciousness of humans, and by doing so, we must slow down and think. I think writing poetry is a perfect contribution to his philosophies. When we slow down are heads, in such a busy world, and focus on ourselves and our surroundings, we can find a peace within ourselves, and for a while we won't feel so crazy in this hectic world. It is important to slow down, reflect on yourself, figure yourself out.

E.e. Cummings, Robert Frost, William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Sylvia Plath. These are names (at least one) that almost everyone knows. These people are some of the most iconic and famous poets who all lived tragically beautiful lives. In high school we learn about Shakespeare and his sonnets, we analyze Robert Frost and what exactly he meant by walking the lonely path. We dive into Poe's lunatic head, and love e.e Cummings and Plath for their undying, lusting love. The point is that we learned about these people because they made a difference and connection in our lives. They sparked a love, or maybe a boredom for some of us, but for others, a very very strong love. Without these previous poets and lovers and dreamers, our world would be so bland and ordinary. These are some of the many famous poets who inspired many others. Amateurs like myself, and less known poets such as Edwin Arlington, still make a difference today. Maybe we don't make a difference in the whole world, but we sure do make a difference in ourselves, and that's what is important. Find yourself, love yourself, be extraordinary and passionate.

"There is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness in the porportion." -Edgar Allan Poe

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
