Every year artists display their talents through beautifully various works of art around the world. Here are a few of my personal favorite art installations of 2016:
Basilica di Siponto by Edoardo Tresoldi
On the site of an early Christian Italian basilica in the historic park of Siponto, Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi constructed a wire mesh installation resurrecting the monument as it forms “cavernous archways, soaring columns and a romanesque roof” of the ancient town’s architectural quality.
Labyrinth by Motoi Yamamato
What appears to be a spiraling current of some sort of hurricane is actually a meticulous pattern created by table salt. Japanese artist Motoi Yamamato displays this "ritualistic symbolism of the element and celebrate the importance of the salt industry to the region" onto the floor of a 13th century medieval castle in the South of France.
JR au Louvre by JR
Using photographic prints, French street artist JR camouflaged I.M. Pei’s iconic glass pyramidat the world-renowned Musée du Louvre in Paris with photographic prints. In order to view JR's creation, one must view the structure from a precise angle to see the optical illusion.
Sense of Field by Hitomi Sato
Tokyo-based artist Hitomi Sato’s installation uses thousands of transparent film hands coming out of two parallel walls where visitors are, not only able to experience the visually pleasing aesthetics of the shimmering light, but also are touched by the dancing bristles as they move along the middle.
The Canopy by Rebecca Louise Law
Artist and gardening enthusiast Rebecca Louise Law combined her two passions of art and gardening to create The Canopy, an installation made up of 150,000 native Australian flowers with copper wire to adorn the skylight in Melbourne’s Eastland Shopping Mall.
The Floating Piers by Christo
Contemporary conceptual artist Christo, famous for his land art creations, has constructed a series of bright yellow paths that invites residents and visitors of Sulzano, Italy, to commute to its neighboring islands on foot. Like all of Christo’s installations, there is a deeper meaning in which, “The mountains surrounding the lake will offer a bird’s-eye view of The Floating Piers, exposing unnoticed angles and altering perspectives,” he explained. “The water, the wind, the sun – all this is part of the project.
The Rubicon by Jason deCaires Taylor
Jason deCaires Taylor has sculpted a series of hyperrealistic human figures in Europe’s First Underwater Art Museum, Museo Atlantico, located off the coast of the Lanzarote Island in the Atlantic Ocean.
Wander Through the Crystal Universe by Teamlab
Japanese collective Teamlab has presented its largest digital art exhibition to date of a 3,000 square meter labyrinth structure inviting audience into a virtual, kaleidoscopic and multi-sensory expanse of color and light.
