Doesn’t it ever feel as if our Brown Folks of Los Angeles are constantly disregarded? As if our diplomas and degrees y nuesta chinga de cada dia are not good enough? As if our younger generations do not carry the potential to be the next best selling author or our next congress womyn?

The way our potential and ambition is overlooked. How we are constantly criticized for our natural skin, our natural hair y nuestra cultura hermosa.

Ya basta con esas chingaderas!

It’s our time to shine and stand in solidarity with the variety tones of Brown that live within our community of East LA.

If you identify as a Chicana/Chicano, Xicana/Xicano, Mexican, Mexican American, Afro Mexican, or are simply Down With The Brown, you can easily relate to what is being spoken about here.

If it isn’t the media that is bashing on us or Trump the Dump Clown then perhaps it's within our own familias where we are victims of Machismo or verbal/domestic abuse. It’s sad to see our people fight one another instead of rising up juntos to destroy the patriarchal capitalist society we live in.

Now if ending white supremacy is one of the major goals on your to do list, don’t you worry now--YOU ARE NOT ALONE! There are many of us who are, at this very moment, taking the steps necessary to gradually revolt and reconstruct the system.

Our lives are just beginning, and if you’re reading this far in, chances are you’re already on the right path towards improvising and getting involved within the community. Here is your chance to link and connect with individuals who also feel the same way.

On Wednesday May 18, the MEXA de ELAC is having an Open Mic and Art Exhibition free for the entire community. On top of our lovely visitors and artist@s there will also be local vendors and FREE FOOD provided by a local restaurant in none other than Boyle Heights. Our doors open at 6pm to 10pm and the Open Mic will start at 7 pm. The great thing is that it will all be taking place in our new building located in front of the Library, in F5-205 (Multi-Purpose Room) with a huge stage for our magnificent performers and poets and musicians to have to themselves.

Our motive is to provide a space for Our People to express their voices, to liberate their passions, and empower one another.

This event is one of many that will be held by MEXA de ELAC, so to keep in touch with us via Facebook go ahead and click: https://www.facebook.com/MEXAdeELAC

Also, invite your peoples! Even if they don’t identify with the above, we don’t discriminate pa nada.

In Solidarity,

Yesenia Salazar

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
