The purpose of art is the interpretation of the people who are observing the piece. Art is not always a painting or drawing, in fact, art is not always physical or tangible, but art always involves emotion. People may say they do not understand art, but the artist did not make it for you to understand what they are thinking, but rather what you think when you observe. Art affects us every day and you do love art, whether you know it or not.

Art is in everything. It can be a painting or drawing. It can also be a story or a poem and it can create your own story or remind you of a memory.

The most popular form of art today is song. Songs help us explain our inexplicable thoughts and feelings and affect us in the most magnificent way. People listen to songs that help them with studying, partying or relaxing; they help shape our mood.

If you are at a party and your "jam" comes on, you are going to be in the best mood and all you want to do is express how you're feeling at that moment.

If you are in love or gaining feelings, songs like "Falling in Love At a Coffee Shop" or artists like Sam Smith can make you think of times when you were so happy that only the words of someone else could express how you feel. They are creating art for you.

With that, people often correlate songs with their lives. Especially when they are sad, for some reason, it seems that every sad song somehow is about their life. Songs help with your memories. All those Adele love songs, talking about how much she is in love with a man she can't have, that make us all cry, affect us like that because we either lost someone we cherished or dreaded losing, or want to have someone we dread losing. Art not only creates a memory, but it can also create a future story or something you want.

That's art. Creating something that allows for a person to interpret it how they feel. Maybe that song or Sam Smith doesn't make you feel happy or give you the feels, but it can for others. That's why art is so powerful and why everyone appreciates art.

Additionally, writings and videos can make people emotional or make them think in a way that they didn't know they would feel. The commercials about people proposing in cute ways or Nike commercials, all give us a feeling, whatever it is. I have definitely teared up at videos. And we have all had to change the channel during those Sarah Mclachlan commercials, or we would give our house to save a puppy. That's what they intend to do. Commercials are an art, because they make you feel a certain way, even if you weren't expecting it.

The beats and movements in dances can entrance people. They have that ability to make you feel something but you don't know what it is. Violent and quick sharp movements in hip hop dance have a different effect on us than soft ones do in ballet. These proclamations of storytelling or entertainment allows someone to interpret how they feel, and that is art affecting you.

Before people go criticizing art too much, be aware that it is a huge part of your life. It may seem stupid or confusing and that curtains in a picture are just blue because they want to be. Conversely, art is for you and however you perceive it. Without art, who knows how our lives would be?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
