What I Learned From "Games of Thrones" and Why We All Need to Celebrate it's Return

I will be the first to admit that when first presented with the opportunity to watch Game of Thrones I hesitated.

I thought it was for nerds, guy nerds. But Game of Thrones is not just for guys, it is piercing the hearts of many women as well.

The long anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones is here. HBO's killer show has all you can ask for in a great show. The sword-fights, the sex, the nudity, the intrigue – we can certainly indulge in and enjoy these fantasies.

George R.R Martin's fantasy novels were adapted into this American fantasy drama, created by David Benioff and D.B Weiss, captivating the hearts of millions of viewers. Entertainment Weekly reports that nearly 20 million viewers tune in regularly. As the show's popularity grows, so has the number of babies named after the show's character Khaleesi ( “The mother of the dragon").

It is easy to become deeply involved in this show, the characters, and the intriguing plot. Game of Thrones creates a world that we vicariously navigate in every sense, from the topographic opening credits to our love-hate relationships with the complicated and not always comprehensible characters. And even when you get so frustrated because your head is about to explode from the confusion, you can't stop watching because you are too emotionally invested in what happens next.

The fantasy-filled show may be FILLED with made up words and dragons, but it still has important life lessons to be learned.

Size doesn't matter.

Tyrion Lannister proves that size DOES NOT MATTER. The character played by Peter Dinklage is changing the lives of little people. According to Hollywood Journal there are only 30,000 little people currently living in the United States, which means that most Americans may not even meet one little person in their lifetime. These demographics indicate that the little person image is solely based on what's seen on television and in movies. Wizard of Oz and Snow White has influenced the way people view and think of little people. Game of Thrones is bringing awareness to them and showing the rest of the world that they are just like everybody else.

Weddings are extremely stressful.

Will the seating chart be right? Will the dad behave? Will everything go perfectly
according to the plans? Odds are it will go a lot smoother than Game of Thrones “red
wedding." Weddings bring out the worst and the best in everyone, probably not “red
wedding" worst, but you get the idea. The "Red Wedding" brought new meaning to the
phrase "til death do us part".

Teenagers should not be given so much power.

King Joffrey certainly has let power go to that pretty little head of his when he develops a love for torture, murder and starting wars. If anything I think we can all agree that power can definitely go to peoples' heads.

Winter is coming.

According to George R.R. Martin, “Winter is coming" generally expresses the sentiment that there are always dark periods in each of our lives and even if things are good now, considered the summer period, we must always be ready for a dark period when events eventually turn against us, thus the winter period.

Love Hurts.

Jon Snow and Ygritte were from opposite sides of the tracks, yet they still found love, until his secret agent status was exposed and she put three arrows in him as he ran away. But Jon survived and the two would meet again. When they did it was almost poetic: their eyes met, their faces softened... and then she was shot through the heart and he held her in his arms until her last breath. They really loved each other to death!

In the end, family SHOULD always come first.

With Tyrion Lannister, only hours away from being wrongly executed, Jamie, his faithful brother, risks everything to come save his brother and set him free. Just like bro's before ho's, Jamie teaches us the real meaning of brothers for life!

Don't underestimate a woman.

Just like many women on a mission, Brienne of Tarth does not let anything get in the way from getting what she wants, especially not a man.

Life, just like Game of Thrones is unpredictable.

You think your life is going one way and then all of a sudden...BAM! just as fast as a main character gets killed on Game of Thrones, it all changes. The creators have made the show impossible to anticipate, giving us a dopamine rush that keeps us coming back for more.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
