Donald Trump. Hilary Clinton. He's crass. She's corrupt. This is all I ever hear about. I don't know about all of you, but I have completely had it with seeing politically oriented things being thrown at me all over social media, especially Facebook. Ever since the second presidential debate, I have not been able to escape the constant talk about politics. Now, it is absolutely no secret that anything that involves a person's political opinion is a touchy subject, so I'm sure all of you are with me on this one. Every single time I log on, I can expect to see a handful of grumpy acquaintances writing paragraphs about how much the other party sucks, uninformed millennials sharing memes that make them look like they care about politics, the occasional "I'm moving to Canada," and so on. And let me tell you, I am over it.
I completely understand that this is an extremely important time for the United States - I am a Political Science major after all (which should show you how much it must have taken me to be fed up enough to write this article). However, social media is not the place to force your views upon people in an attempt to get them to change their minds. I'll let you in on a little secret: no one is going to change their mind because of your Facebook rant. I read something earlier today that made me think wow, everyone needs to read this. The post was about how people have stopped listening to understand, and started listening to respond. This is something that I believe is true of every political debate there ever was; whether it be between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton or good old Steve and Joe on Facebook.
So, next time you're thinking of sharing something politics-related, remember that it isn't going to swing anyone's vote. If anything, it will probably anger someone else, because that is the effect social media politics has on people. How about you share a nice picture of your grandma's 80th birthday or the cute thing your dog just did? That would be nice for a change, don't you think?
