With the overwhelming amount of propaganda flooding our social media, it can be difficult to not be hyperaware of every new "beauty" product surfacing.
Whether it's that eyelash growth serum that popped up on your Instagram Stories or that flawless tattoo cover-up makeup you fell in love with on Buzzfeed (you don't even have tattoos?), advertisements have a great way of getting consumers to buy almost anything.
And when Kylie Jenner is using it? Even more of a reason to throw your money mindlessly at companies without even considering the product for its actual use!
Fast-forward: Your product arrives in the mail. You honestly forgot ordering the product, but become excited when you remember how amazing it worked on the Hadid's.
To your disappointment, the product does nothing.
However, with your optimistic attitude (and denial of spending that much on shipping), you continue to use the product before realizing the sad reality: you fell into yet another internet scam.
Many businesses depend purely on this cycle to survive- relying on the simple art of product placement and influencer marketing to have just enough users make an order that will result in a profit.
There is nothing wrong with being attracted to a product advertised by an influencer, in fact, many influencers genuinely promote products they enjoy.
However, if you like a product, think before ordering it. Look at the comment section. Do some research. Do açai berries really lead to losing 10 pounds in one week? Or are you just ordering them because the model looks healthy?
