I was looking on the Instagram explore page from my phone, just trying to pass time and I came across a meme so very accurate. It was a screenshot of a tweet of someone saying “Remember black man, they’ll fuck you --but won’t fight for you. With it came a tweet exchange between pop star Selena Gomez and a twitter user. She had previously tweeted saying “There are more important things to talk about….Why can’t people use their voice for something that fucking matter." She presumably wrote this tweet in the internet’s response and commentary on the Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s feud with Taylor Swift.
The twitter user asked her “why haven’t you or Taylor not said a thing about #BlackLivesMatter (insert emoji) or police brutality." She tweeted back “oh lol so that means if I hashtag something I save lives? No-I could give two fuck about ‘sides,’ however, the meme was to make a point of white women who want to be in bed with a black man or even date them but refuse to fight for their rights in America.
The problem is that this is nothing new. Weren’t we just talking about Kylie Jenner not speaking about African American issues though her boyfriend is black as well the hairstyles she been wearing. Ultimately, there are two sides to this that get on my nerves. The first is how white girls and how they seem to be dating or messing around with black men for the wrong reasons. I’ve observed this a lot during my first year of college and a little bit a high school. It always seems that they want to be with a black guy because: 1. They’re trying to irritate their daddy, 2. They’re trying to get some cool/hipster points or gain some street cred and 3. They’re trying to fulfill a fetish. The third one mean they don’t love or care for the guy for them it’s because of their skin color.
Meanwhile, black men love the attention they get from white girls and opt to bash black women whose been in the same boat since day one (figuratively and literally). Black women have been standing by black men's side for year and holding them down like Jesse Williams said but we keep devaluing them. The other side is that if white woman cares enough African Americans to be consuming our popular culture and/or making a black man they’re bae then they should be able to support their movements that are being made to help end systematic injustice to black men. It’s the same as someone having a gay best friend but not supporting same-sex marriage. A cause that matters to that gay best friend. The point is that us black men, we are not a social or sexual commodity. We are people as well.
It’s more than okay to speak about against issues that may not identify with your color, gender, or orientation.
