The word blessed is used so much in today's society. People use it to describe just about anything. Your professor cancelled class? So very blessed. The cookout line is, for once, only two cars long? Oh bless. That cute guy you met in history responded to your snapchat right after he opened it without waiting? So blessed. And then there are the moments we use the same word to describe not so very fortunate events. You have to dress up for formal chapter? Ugh not blessed. Can't find a parking spot at the library? So not blessed.
Have you ever thought to yourself what those words actually mean and the impact they can have on certain people who hear you say them? Don't get me wrong, I'm the first to squeal and say so blessed when I take that first sip of my Blue Raspberry Icee from Parker's. All I'm trying to say is before we use the term "blessed" to describe something we assume shows how "un blessed" we are, we need to realize how blessed we actually are.
- Globally, 1.2 billion people (22 percent) live on less than $1.25 a day.
- 757 million adults still lack basic reading and writing skills.
- More than 1.5 billion people live in countries affected by conflict—about a fifth of the world’s population.
- Nearly 11 percent of the world’s population is undernourished.
The following picture includes one of my favorite quotes.
Again, I'm not saying we can't ever add #Blessed to our tweets. I'm just saying that before we cross our arms and sarcastically say "ugh blessed" when Netflix won't load fast enough, remember this: You have a computer, you have internet access, and you are blessed enough to have that Netflix account with or without that red loading circle.
