What does it mean to have an old soul? People’s interpretation of what an old soul is varies. To some people, an old soul is someone who feels like they’ve already experienced their life before. They have a strong sense of déjà vu. To others, someone with an old soul is someone who simply wants to cling to old-fashioned ways.

Simplified, an old soul is someone who isn’t as interested in the trends of their generation. This doesn’t mean that they think the trends are bad, the trends just have no appeal to them.

No matter how we define what an old soul is, I know that I possess one, in just about every definition of the term. Before college, I was in bed at nine and awake at six the next morning with a mug full of coffee in my hands.

Old souls tend to find other old souls in this journey we call life. They find things in common and share their love of what those things might be. If you aren’t sure whether you are an old soul or not, below are just a few things that most people who call themselves old souls enjoy.

1. Face to Face Conversations

I hate texting. I’m not kidding. I’m a millennial who cannot stand that form of communication unless it is necessary. Too much can be miscommunicated in a text message. You are not able to figure out what kind of mood someone might be in, their tone of voice, or even their facial expressions during your conversation.

2. Reading

I am not a huge fan of technology. Don’t get me wrong, I am so thankful that I have everything that I have, including Netflix. However, I don’t think I should spend all my time on technology. I have enjoyed reading ever since my mom taught me how to read. I learn new vocabulary and can be transported into other worlds and stories for a few hours.

3. Vinyl Records

I love the imperfections of a record. I feel that the music on a record is raw, drawing you in with its authenticity. Don’t even get me started on the feeling I get when I walk into my favorite record store.

4. Long Road Trips

In our society where we want instant gratification, most people travel long journeys by plane. I prefer the long hours spent in a car, especially if it is with friends. During the time spent together you can talk more in one sitting than you probably have during your friendship. You also can experience neat sights along the way!

5. Different Hobbies

These hobbies are outside the typical sports and arts. Old souls might take up knitting, crocheting, whittling, SLR photography, bird watching, stamp collecting, or walking.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
