Are You Judging Me Based Off My Letters?

3

What’s the first thing you ask a young man or woman when you meet them at a party or campus event? Ignore the obvious “what’s your name” question. Most conversations I’ve had started with “What fraternity are you in?” or “What sorority are you in?” I, too, am guilty of this, and I’m certain that most people would agree that they are as well. When a guy or girl responds, an automatic judgment arises. Stereotypes and reputations come into play. Is their chapter ranked high? Or are they bottom house? Would talking to them ruin your reputation? Are you letting their sorority or fraternity define them?
Whatever happened to someone getting to know someone else for who they are? It seems difficult to get to know people these days. The hook up culture overpowers the dating culture. We like someone either for their looks or their letters. Whenever you hear a name of an organization, you are reminded of their reputation. I have heard a ton of stories from friends and random students that young men or women have turned their backs on them just because of what house they’re a part of. The friends I talked to are some of the nicest people I have ever met, but they are being rejected because of the letters they wear and the house they felt the most connection with. I asked one of my best friends, who attends USC, what she thinks about the judgment of people based on their letters:
She said, “Well, when I meet someone new, I'm asked what house I'm in within the first few minutes. Here at USC ADII is middle tier, so if the person is in a top tier house I usually hear ‘oooh ok cool’ and I can tell it's in a judging or condescending tone. I’ve noticed that I do it myself too, though. When I see a large or unfortunate-looking girl in a certain sorority’s letters I'm always shocked and catch myself thinking she must be really wealthy, because to be in that house here you basically have to have looks and/or money. When I see a girl who's gorgeous, blonde and from Newport, I'm SHOCKED if she isn't in another good house.
I chose my house based on what felt right in my heart. I even cut a higher-ranked house. I’ve often wondered if I made the right choice in doing so after learning how much house ranking and reputation is emphasized.” College students these days are so concerned about their reputation. It’s a problem that hits students hard. While going through recruitment, men and women want to be in a house that they both connect with and that also has good standing. It’s sometimes hard to get both, but in the end it should be about the connection more than just the reputation. Get to know the person for who they are. If you feel like their letters will ruin your reputation, then you should reconsider your priorities. Some people wonder why they can’t get a boyfriend or are not meeting enough people. Maybe if they would stop judging others based off of their letters and give them a chance, then maybe there will be a better ending to the story. I am in AOII and I am not ashamed of my letters. No one should ever be ashamed of their letters just because someone else doesn’t approve of them. If they turn their back on you right after you tell them what fraternity or sorority you are in, then they are not worth your time or effort.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
