Are You Even Living?

Or are you merely just breathing?

Are You Even Living?
Hope Swaim

On a 10 p.m. flight, I sit crunched against the side of a window, an entire row to myself. I am living the traveler's dream. The routine "if we are gonna crash make sure you put that oxygen mask on" speech is given with the required flight attendant demo. Having heard this speech a million times before I sit with headphones on, quite the rebel, I know.

We take flight, and I mindlessly sit continuing to shove the free mini pretzels from southwest into my mouth. Continuing to regret my decision of not getting water. The lights go dim in the cabin, and I turn my gaze to the window. A sense of awe comes over me. Not just because of the entire row I have, but the way the sky dances in stars. These essential balls of gas are millions of miles away but manage to shine still through the clouds. It's amazing just to realize we are only one galaxy of the millions. But even more fascinating are the city lights below illuminating the shape of landscapes. From this altitude all you see are these lights and how still everything looks. Up here the only sound is the continuous rotation of the turbines. But the world illuminated below is not still by any means; all those lights are places filled with people. People who are living. Someone right now is giving birth to their new daughter, someone is dying, someone just got married, someone is having their first kiss, someone is getting their heartbroken...

And it hits you; you are such a small piece in this thing called life.

Flying up here makes you realize so many things will not matter in a year. That fight will not matter, and that breakup will pass because time heals everything. This world is so vast, and there are so many places to see and so many people to experience, why would you ever want to confine yourself to a cage of existence?

People hurt us; people leave us. I know these things jade us from trusting and loving. But there are over eight billion other humans who are breathing, living and loving on this earth. People who one day will be our spouses, our maids of honor, our brother-in-laws, our friends. We will never have these experiences of something new if we don't let go of the old. People are placed into your life for a reason. Whether you believe in God or some extraordinary force that controls the way the world turns, there are experiences in life we need to go through. I know it's hard just to accept the way life works sometimes, but there is a bigger purpose we owe to ourselves. It is to live. Live your life to the fullest and love with your entire self.

Right now someone is flying over your city, looking at the stillness of your lights.

Be one of those lights and just live.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
