Universal Rights For Refugees

Human rights are universal. There is a universal culture present in our world today because of globalization. And henceforth, there is a set of universal human rights that are achievable throughout the world. Because of the connectedness of our world, humans are becoming increasingly autonomous when it comes to human rights. The contexts in which humans make their decisions have reached out further than their specific populations, and are quickly becoming the world community. The global society thinks and communicates together on national issues; therefore the global culture is significantly more interconnected that ever before.

Some would argue that there is often a need to sacrifice the "rights" of one for the good of many. If there is a need to sacrifice personal rights for the needs of the country as whole, it would be the individual’s right to decide on their relinquishment. Choosing for the people by saying that they will give up their universal human rights is in effect denying them those rights. Many rights are too expensive for some countries to handle, but the leadership of those countries should then be pressured to reform. That’s not to assume that universal human rights can only be achieved in cohesion with western ideals, and in fact, often are contested by the powers of the global north.

Regardless of economic affluence, women in western cultures and non-western cultures alike require their universal human rights. They do not wish to be confined to their freedom to focus on the home and family or the freedom not to participate in the workforce. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, all women should have the freedom to participate freely with their social and economic rights.

Imposing universality for refugees will be achieved by arguing a threat to the peace and refraining from political subjugation in order to align with the UN Charter's intervention law. This position will justify the imposition of universal rights on the host countries that do not recognize them to be universal. Intervention must take place on behalf of the world citizens from regimes that repeatedly violate universal human rights. This can be achieved by establishing norms or rules that will promote, implement and enforce the rules and decisions elected multilaterally by institutions like the United Nations. In the globalized world, Syrian refugees are voicing their necessity for freedom, but their voices are just not being heard. Peace would only be achieved by the government’s recognition of the universality of the refugee rights.

In order to change these problems, the currently weak institution that is the United Nations would need to be strengthened in order to contest the sovereignty of nations that are refusing basic universal human rights to their new citizens. The benefit of actions being reached by UN is that the decisions would be multilateral instead of unilateral, and humanitarian conclusions instead of a political conclusions would be reached to decide what rights are truly fundamental.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
