As I scroll through my Facebook feed or watch television, I always see a Hubble contacts advertisement. As someone who is very interested in optometry I knew I had to look into Hubble and see how their contacts could be so cheap! So I did some digging to find out what really these contacts are like and how they weigh against other competitors. My verdict on Hubble contacts is that you get what you pay for with these lenses.
Hubble offers daily contact lenses costing about $30 for 30 days of contacts. This sounds like a steal, but there are a couple of problems with Hubble contacts. The first is that they use an older type of lens that doesn't allow as much oxygen through the lens. Current contacts have oxygen transmissibility of around 80 Dk/t, but Hubble's contacts have and oxygen transmissibility of 18.8 Dk/t.
Our eyes need air in to maintain their health, To keep your eyes healthy the needed oxygen transmissibility is 24 Dk/t. If your eyes do not get enough oxygen, you can develop corneal ulcers which can give way to infection, and blood vessels could grow into your cornea and permanently interfere with your vision. It is important to remember that you are putting something that isn't supposed to be in your eye in it, which is okay as long as you are properly utilizing them.
Another problem with Hubble contacts is that they are selling outdated technology at prices that are way higher than their worth. Dr. Claudia Lee says "If you were offered a first generation iPhone for $250, or the choice to pay an extra $50 for an iPhone 7 …. which one is the better deal?" She says Hubble lenses just aren't as good of quality as other available lenses.
Additionally, Hubble uses a high water content lens, these tend to be super comfortable, but just because they feel comfortable does not mean that they fit right. They could still be too tight, which hinders the circulation to your eyes.
If you do plan on purchasing from Hubble despite all of this, at a minimum make sure to continue to see your eye doctor yearly for a comprehensive exam and make sure to get an evaluation of your contact lenses done by your optometrist.
To be honest I haven't tried Hubble contacts yet, and honestly I don't plan on trying them. Overall while Hubble contacts may sound like a good deal, but in the long run they just aren't healthy for your eyes. It is super important that you talk to your optometrist before wearing Hubble contacts. You only get one set of eyes so treat them with care. I'll take my iphone 7 contact lenses for $50 more.
