Are College Breaks Too Long?

I remember a couple of years back when I was still in high school, vacation was something I couldn’t wait for. I mean, come on, who doesn’t like break? No school, little to no work and days on end to just have fun with friends and do whatever you want? You’d have to be crazy to somehow grow bored of all that time off. However, since I’ve been in college I’ve seriously begun to reconsider whether our breaks are simply too long. Do we really need a month off for the winter holidays? Is a three to four month summer break really necessary?

When I first discovered how long college breaks would be when I was in high school, I was enthusiastic about that amount of time we’d be getting off and I never really imagined I’d ever really be writing an article down the road complaining about how we have too much time off. However, here I am, writing about how I’d rather be studying and taking classes than sitting at home doing nothing with my days. How I’d rather be learning about my major, living independently again and be surrounded by other students and friends than to be sitting at home being unproductive.

Now a sophomore in college, I’m on my second month long winter break and I’m remembering the growing boredom I began to feel over the summer and during last year’s winter break. I’ve enjoyed my time off of school but I’m beginning to once again have the urge to learn and be around my college friends. I begin to grow a bit more restless everyday I’m at home and I’m beginning to again think that we really do have too much time off of school. I know that I’m also not the only one that grows restless at home. I’ve spoken with multiple friends who’ve also agreed that although it’s great to go back home, see family and old friends, after a while you do begin to get bored with your time off and just want to move back onto campus.

Not everybody may agree that college breaks are too long. Some people are able to keep busy by either working and making a bit of extra cash or getting ahead in their studies by self-teaching themselves some of the material. Unfortunately, I’ve always had trouble concentrating on doing any work unless I’m in a working environment, which isn’t really at home. After awhile, I simply have trouble keeping myself busy and want to do nothing else but return to school.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
