Today i had the pleasures of attending an event held for Arbor day at the Campus Fountain! The event had a reading of "The Lorox" read by volunteer actor candidate Colin Hafkey on the rock by the fountain. Mr. Hafkey did an excellent job. Following the event, was a special tree ceremony where ceremony participants planted a tree. Members from the Office Of Sustainability were there as well.
Landfill on the Lawn was apart of this event which is held yearly as well.
After attending this event i decided to get ahold of some more information on Arbor day. Here is a video from the foundation:
"Arbor Day is an annual observance
that celebrates the role of trees in
our lives and promotes tree planting
and care. As a formal holiday, it was
first observed in 1872, in Nebraska, but
tree planting festivals are as old as civilization.
The tree has appeared throughout
history and literature as the symbol of life."
Arbor day is very important, in fact; so important that even at the White House they participate! Many presidents support the environment including Theodore Roosevelt!
"During his presidency, Roosevelt established 230 million acres of national parks and public lands to be protected from intervention. More than half of the protected areas were set aside as national forests. He also established the U.S. Forest Service to ensure these forests stay protected and maintained. Roosevelt shared his love for the forest in a penned Arbor Day letter expressing the importance of trees and the need to protect them. But he wasn’t alone in protecting these natural wonders. "
To celebrate Arbor Day, i have come up with a few facts i found on the internet about Trees.
1) "One large tree can provide a day’s supply of oxygen for up to four people."- https://projects.ncsu.edu/project/treesofstrength/...
2) "Trees provide vital wildlife habitat."- https://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/disturbance/invasive_spe...
3) "Trees remove pollution from the atmosphere, improving air quality and human health. " - https://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/pubs/43676
4) "Office workers with a view of trees report significantly less stress and more satisfaction. " - http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/0282758...
5) "More than 20% of the world’s oxygen is produced in the Amazon Rainforest"- http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/articles/tropic...
Now presidents are not the only people who are involved with Arbor Day, fun fact; I found this little tidbit on the web:
"Greensboro has been designated a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Each year in March, Greensboro Beautiful plants trees in observance of Arbor Day to help the City of Greensboro retain its Tree City USA designation.
In observance of Arbor Day this year, Greensboro Beautiful will plant a commemorative tree and kick off the 2017 NeighborWoods Community Tree Planting Program which will be held in the Sunset Hills Neighborhood." -Here
A rally is rumored to take place in City Park in Greensboro tomorrow that is free for the public that will sort of revolve around Arbor Day. The event will have speakers who are professors, and other activists. Conservation (it has been rumored) is among one of the topics being discussed for this event. The rally will be organized, and peaceful.
