Most of the time when I tell inquirers about my major, they ask, "What is occupational therapy?" Therefore, to begin this article let us clarify.
Occupational therapy is a form of treatment that helps people with physical and mental problems learn to do the activities of daily life. Occupational therapy differs from Physical Therapy because as an OT, we look at the big picture. We do not treat a specific part of the body or focus on a single diagnosis and treat it. Instead, we look at the way the impaired body part has influenced the client's life and invent ways to help cope with what has happened due to that injury.
When I was a junior in high school, I was investigating career choices. I knew I wanted to help people so when I came across Occupational Therapy I knew it was the perfect match for me. I have the opportunity to work with any age group ranging from babies to elderly adults. I can treat people with autism, neurological disorders, or sports injuries. I get to directly influence someone’s life for the better and grant someone the gift of living his or her best life.
Throughout my rigorous occupational therapy program, thinking of my future career always helps me stay focused and motivates me to reach my goals.
I am so proud to say that this year is the 100-year anniversary of Occupational Therapy starting in 1917 when the American Occupational Therapy Association was created. It is amazing to see how far my future profession has come with the creation of accelerated programs, clinics, certifications, workshops and more. This profession is still growing and becoming more popular in the medical field.
I encourage all readers out there who have a caring, patient, trust worthy and hardworking personality to look into occupational therapy.
I have seen the effects of Occupational Therapy on patients and how their lives have been changed for the better because of therapy. They are able to do their favorite hobbies again, and live their lives to the fullest without the burden of their injury. I cannot wait for the day when I can give someone their best life back and build a trusting relationship with my patient.
All of these years of college are going to be worth it! Happy anniversary, OT!
