April Music News Recap

It's the last week of April and time again for a recap of music news going on locally AND in the scene. So let's begin!

First and foremost, who is excited for UNA's Spring Concert and Spring Festival? Being a senior, this was the last time I could hope UPC would bring in an act I listened to or would want to see live. Panic! At the Disco could not have been a better choice for this year's concert. Their fifth studio album dropped earlier this year and was their first #1 album its opening week. Death of a Bachelor is pop music at its finest. For someone who has been a fan of the band since fifth grade when "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" came out, this is scene kid me's dream to see such a band play at my university. For those of you curious about the band and in need of song recommendations, allow me to help. I will drop some links below. Trust me, they're a band worth seeing.

"This Is Gospel"

"I Write Sins Not Tragedies"

"Victorious"

But before Panic! plays on Saturday, April 20, UPC is hosting an all day local music festival on Friday, April 29. Alex Hughes has worked so hard on this project as well, and has done his best to book some of the best local or regional talent to play. Firekid, also known as Dillon Hodges, headlines the festival that evening. But the artist I want to highlight or focus on is Nashville based Jet Black Alley Cat. They were formerly known as Tell Romeo I Hate Him but rebranded the band recently. Lead singer, Joe Wilkinson, calls them "vintage pop." I have to agree. They're one of those bands that I can't really describe a sound but just suggest you check them out and see them play on Friday. They are personal friends of mine but also super talented musicians. Check out their single "Poison" For the full line-up, click here. Ticket information is also posted there as well.

In other news, Prince died on Thursday, April 21. I won't go into more detail on that. But R.I.P Prince.

Kyle Prescott, a former UNA student announced his summer music festival too. Known as Summer Bash 4. Supporting local music and former UNA students is so important. I encourage anyone who can come out to this. It's going to be a blast. I will leave the flyer below for more information.

Do we have any fans of The Maine? If so, listen up! The band recently announced a new cover album called Covers (Side B) featuring a full-length album's worth of cover songs including "Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber. Lead singer, John O'Callaghan said "To beliebe or not to beliebe is not the question here because no one can deny the quality of Sir Justin's tune. We haven't fully converted to the church of Bieber just yet, but we decided to try our hand at covering this religious hymn,"

Well said, John. For more information, please click here.

That's a wrap for this music news recap!Their first single is the "Love Yourself" cover, and you can watch that here:

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
