Swackett is a weather forecasting app that also provides a guide on the best type of clothing to wear for the day's conditions. Suggestions range from shoes to accessories-- including the notably fashionable umbrella.
2. Sleep Cycle Power Nap ($1.99)
Every college student pulls a few late nights they are not proud of staying up to finish homework. The worst part of this unhealthy habit is the sleep deprivation felt the next two days. If you feel the urge to squeeze in a nap, but are worried about how it will affect you for the rest of the day, Sleep Cycle's Power Nap app is a great option. The app allows the user to choose from three different napping styles that vary in length and explain the effects of each. The app will wake you up when you are in your lightest stage of sleep so you do not wake up feeling groggy.
3. Mint (Free)
Mint can help you tackle budgeting and your personal financial goals. Mint allows the user to watch all of their personal finances no matter how busy or where you may be located. Mint even suggests areas you can save based on your spending habits.
4. SafeTrek (Free)
Traveling alone at night can cause a little bit of anxiety no matter where you are. Students walk to their car at night, cross campus to meet with friends, or may find themselves a bit lost in their new city. With SafeTrek all you have to do is press a button that says, “Hold until safe” and if something happens just let go of your phone and it will call the police automatically and notify them where you are. This app is better than pepper spray and it has been receiving 5 stars across the board. It’s considered one of the best safety apps.
5. Venmo (Free)
One of the most common ways to bond with your friends is going out to eat. Sometimes, you may not have your wallet on you or the server will only bring a single bill for the party. Make share payments with just about anyone for free with this clever app. You can also send requests for payments from practically anyone. Venmo is quick and easy to use, this app is sure to become one of your favorites in no time.
6. SkimmAhead (Free, Subscription - $2.99 monthly)
More practically utilized for its email subscription service, theSkimmdoes all the work finding the best current events so you do not have to. The Skimm delivers an engaging overview of the top news headlines (international, domestic, and pop culture) from the previous day to your inbox every weekday morning. If you find that you struggle to stay connected with current events, this short newsletter will make you feel like a current events master. SkimmAhead is a pro service offered by the company that also integrates current events into your calendar.
7. MyFitnessPal (Free, Premium Upgrade - $9.99 monthly/$49.99 annually)
As a user who has been tracking for over three years, MyFitnessPal is your savior for a free nutritionist. You may already know the app as what your friends are using to lose weight and count calories. Many people are unaware, however, that the app also tracks your macro health data including sodium, sugar, protein, and fat intake everyday. The app allows you to control your goals for each category and log all of the substances you put in your body from food to beverages to vitamin supplements. You can scan the barcode or search the item, but if for some reason you cannot find the item you are looking for, the app also allows you to manually add a new item.
8. eColor Genius by L'Oréal Paris (Free)
L'Oreal has created an app soon to become your personal makeover team. The app combines your outfit, time of day, and location to suggest a matching makeup style. The app suggests a lip, eye, and nail color to match or blend depending on your preferences. This app will help you stray away from your usual routine and learn new techniques and styles.
9. Scanner Mini (Free, Pro Upgrade $3.99)
Every college student should have this—especially if you don’t actually own a scanner. Company and college printers can be difficult to access or use. Scanner Mini is not flawless, but works for general documentation. The Pro upgrade is well worth the extra couple bucks. I have yet to need a physical scanner for my personal documents while using this app for over two years.
10. OpenTable (Free)
Open Table is an incredibly useful app for those that love to have spontaneous dinners with friends but are annoyed with booking a last minute table or waiting around the restaurant for one to open up. This app provides you with everything you need to quickly and easily choose a local restaurant, from independent reviews, available times and the menu.
