Some Appreciation For Halloween

It's not Christmas, but it makes me merry!

Demented clowns, blood splattered on windows, witchcraft and graveyards at 3 a.m. Ah, yes, It’s that time of year again. What may seem like a nightmare to most is a dream come true for me. But don’t worry – the blood I speak of is artificial! And, well, maybe I’m not as excited about the demented clowns considering everything that’s been going on.

With October just beginning, it is only appropriate that I share my enthusiasm regarding my favorite holiday with the rest of the world. That holiday is of course Halloween.

I tend to believe that there is a special breed of people who hold Halloween as their favorite holiday. Yes, everyone has fun on Halloween. Most of my generation enjoys getting totally plastered for “Halloweekend” (that might be a Massachusetts thing, I’m not sure). Many people like to wear cliché costumes. You know, like the sexy firefighter or Risky Business costume. How many times have you seen those in one night? Probably too many times. Some people look at it as a big party – and I mean, that’s okay. But that’s not why I like it. The type of people who are truly obsessed with Halloween may be looked at as, well a bit different.

Ever since I was a little girl, Halloween has been my favorite holiday. I anticipate it far more than Christmas and Thanksgiving combined. No, it is not just about the candy for me. I love horror movies, I love jack-o’lanterns and I love dressing up. I love pretty much everything and anything that has to do with Halloween.

The feeling you get around Halloween compares to no other. There is just something about the crisp fall air and nighttime in October that spooks us all a little bit. It’s a distinct exciting feeling that takes us back to when we were younger; that feeling when we got when we all told each other scary stories. For me, Halloween brings back that fun and innocent feeling where we get to be little kids again.

The aspect of Halloween that I look forward to the most though, is seeing all the decorations. Christmas lights are very pretty to look at, but I would much rather go look at Halloween-decorated lawns. There is just so much you can do with a house for Halloween, both inside and out. Last Halloween, I contributed by carving a white gourd into Jack Skellington. I proudly placed him on the front steps of my house, and look forward to figuring out what I will carve this year.

I love seeing houses decked out in fake cobwebs and plastic body parts spread out across the lawn. Halloween is such a fun time of year where everyone can really express themselves. There is so much do to being right near Salem! This year, you can expect to see me dressed up and handing out candy. Beware the crazy clown killers, though. Be sure to watch Hocus Pocus as well as my personal favorite, The Nightmare Before Christmas. In the midst of this crazy election, try to have a good time this fall season, and find your inner spooky. I believe in The Great Pumpkin. I am a Halloween fanatic and damn proud!

I mean, don’t we all wish Halloweentown was real?

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.
