I have never been the kind of person to speak my mind or voice my opinion. I have never stood out and spoken out about issues or events that drew my attention. I have always been the kind of person to sit back and let others speak for me. I have always admired people who took control of their lives and tried new things and voiced their opinion all over social media. But thanks to Odyssey, I have been given a voice.

I used to always see Odyssey articles on Facebook written by college kids about things that so many people can relate to. I used to always want to be a part of that, and I always wondered what it would be like if I could write for Odyssey. I never thought that each week, I would be making content for the world to see. I've always enjoyed writing and this is such a perfect way to get my fix.

Every week, little old me gets to put my voice out into the world for anyone to read. I get to speak out about anything on my mind, and that is so important. As college kids, we have such important voices and have such a huge responsibility to know the world around us. Whether talking about politics, pop culture, recent news, or my own personal experiences, I get to write about anything.

Getting to speak my mind on the things I'm passionate about is one thing, but having them published is a whole new level of exciting. Even if only 10 people see my article, knowing that my voice and thoughts have been given to the world is so rewarding.

Writing for Odyssey is like having my own journal that anyone has access to. I have written about so many things that are personal and special to me. The coolest thing is that when I put my articles out into the world, anyone can share them and the audience expands so much. It is such a cool feeling to know that anyone can see my thoughts.

For me, the shares and views I get are nothing compared to the feeling of knowing my articles impacted someone in some way. Whether I am informing or bringing attention to something important to me such as mental health, or writing a letter to a best friend, I know someone saw my article and it impacted them.

I am so excited that something as cool as Odyssey exists so that people like me have a voice in this world.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
