My Appreciation For Delta Zeta And My Chapter at OWU
OWU Delta Zeta

Many of OWU's Odyssey writers, current and past, have written articles talking about the sorority girl stereotype or how they never thought they would join a sorority.

I am one of those girls. I never thought I would join a sorority. But here I am, in Delta Zeta. I've become so involved and submerged in my sorority, and I love every second of it.

For everything my sisters have given me, I want to express my appreciation.

My sisters have empowered me.

Being in my chapter of Delta Zeta has given me role models that inspire me. The women in our chapter are strong, beautiful, and hard working. Some of them don't give themselves enough credit, but they have put me in awe with their college experiences and lofty goals for the future. It makes me think that I could be more, and they'll support me in doing so.

My sisters have created a loving space and home.

Going into college is intimidating. You're alone, you have to take care of yourself, and you have to deal with all of the emotions that comes with it. Coming into DZ as a new member, being in college became easier and I felt more confident in myself and my abilities. They gave me a home, a support system, where I feel safe to be myself in this wide world. I can no longer imagine college without my sisters and sorority.

My sisters make me feel appreciated and valued.

When I feel comfortable, I am in empowered. At the first opportunity (my first full semester as a full sister), I applied for a position so I can give back to the women that have inspired me. However, soon after starting my position it felt like I was doing more than that. My sisters praised me for doing a good job, when I expected nothing in return. They appreciated my work as I appreciated theirs. Being a part of my sisterhood raised my self respect and my confidence in my ability to lead. If anything, being so encouraged by my sisters has empowered me to aim higher in anything I do.

My sisters have given me opportunities to grow.

Their constant encouragement and support has helped me grow as a person to be more confident socially, professionally, and personally. When I am comfortable in my own skin, I grow. My sorority has fostered an environment for growth.

My sisters and I give back to the world.

Since joining my sorority I have been thinking more about people and the world as a whole and giving back to those in need. Our philanthropy events, one of the broad reasons Greek communities form, and the philanthropy events of other Greeks help us think about issues that may not be directly in front of us. Without this exposure through my sorority, I might have turned out differently after college. I am a better citizen because I joined a sorority.

My sisters, everywhere, will support me in everything I do.

A sorority is more than one chapter. Its a network of chapters. When one is in need of a job or help, I can ask sisters for aid. One phrase that is often said during recruitment is "not just four years, but for life." Its true. After college, and even while I'm in college, I have thousands of sisters and we all share one thing in common: love for our sorority.

So, thank you for everything Delta Zeta.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
