Five Things I Wish I Had Appreciated More In College

You're gonna miss it when you're gone.

College is a glorious time in a person’s life. As a current participant in the rat race, I am nostalgic for it on the regular. Seriously. You really don't appreciate the whimsy of throwing Frisbees on the quad until you're stuck in a cubicle staring at a screen. When you get out into the world and you have bills to pay and adult responsibilities, the things that seemed annoying while you were in college are the things you start to long for. So, for those of you who are still in school, realize that these four years are not forever. Don’t take a second for granted.

Here are the top five things I wish I had appreciated more when I was in college.

1. Being able to pick who you are surrounded with.

You can meet people with similar interests through clubs, classes and mutual friends. Some of the most amazing friendships you make will be in college, because that is when you are really starting to come into your own. (Also, depending on the size of your campus you can easily avoid people if you want to.) Out here in reality, you don’t get to pick your peers as much. Don't like one of your coworkers? Tough. So appreciate your college friends and make them lasting ones!

2. All the free time.

You don’t necessarily realize it when it's happening, but you have so much time, time that you can spend doing literally anything. Take full advantage of it while you can.

3. Being able to barely work (or not work at all) and still survive

When I was in college, I probably worked eight hours and made $50 weekly. But that was all I needed because I had a roof over my head and a meal plan. Life is much simpler when you don’t need to worry about how you’re going to pay your bills.

4. Extra-curricular activities.

Want to go on hikes with a bunch of people who love the outdoors? Want to watch obscure films and eat pizza once a week? Or have a radio show? Or spend an hour speaking French just because? You can do all of these things in college. When you start working full time, you have to make a conscious effort to keep up your hobbies, but in college you just have to block off an hour or so and walk across campus.

5. Studying abroad.

If you love traveling, study abroad. When you are working a 9-5 and those student loans start to roll in there will be so many complications when it comes to being able to travel on a whim. Sure, there are service trips you can sign up for, but studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore a new culture. You really learn to appreciate the world when you’re able to live in a completely new place for a while. Plus, it’s all been set up for you, so all you need to do is apply and hop on a plane. If I could go back, I would have studied abroad twice.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
