Why It's Time To Appreciate The Girl Who Reads

Head down, nose in a book. Gentle eyes scanning each line, pausing to take it all in. Embracing the adventure of an alternate life. We all know that one girl, her muscles tense as she passes a bookstore, eyes darting to the new releases, barely able to stop herself from going in. This is a girl you want to keep close.

She puts herself in the shoes of every character she encounters, always open to different perspectives. She has an awareness of people. Always understanding and easy to befriend. She allows her mind to wander through another world, taking in all it has to offer. She’ll lose herself for minutes, even hours, but she always finds her way back to reality.

This girl is beautiful-- not in a way as superficial as her appearance, but in the way she uses her mind. Expect a challenge. She’ll disagree with you, question your motives, and force you to think outside the box. She will make your head spin, surprising you every single day and teach you about the world. About yourself.

She may be a talker, babbling on about characters in faraway places. Places with more adventure than she can imagine. Every time she finishes a book, she takes a piece of it with her, slowly building herself with each novel, each poem, each word. Adding to the creative beauty that she is.

You’ll want to watch this girl as she reads. Watch her lips slowly curling into a smile when the heroine finally gets her guy. Or a red blush burn her cheeks as she reads through a steamy scene. Watch her eyes dampen as a character is lost, or quiet laughter escape her as she finds humor.

She finds a home in her novels, and she’s sentimental about each one. She has a deep-seated passion for used bookstores, appreciating the smell of a book that has touched so many lives before her. She has a long list of favorites but is always open to suggestions. She loves to see the characters grow and learn, just as they help her grow and learn.

More than a friend, this girl makes an ideal partner, for she’s more interested in words than Instagram likes. She’s an easy buy for birthdays and holidays-- if you know her favorite authors. Though her head can often be in the clouds (or wherever her books take her), she’s down to earth. She strives for a life of love and adventure.

If you’re looking for someone who sees life as an adventure, someone who will encourage all of your dreams (and expect the same in return), then befriend the girl who reads. She’s a one-of-a-kind girl with never-ending potential.

“Because when I read, I don’t really read; I pop a beautiful sentence into my mouth and suck it like a fruit drop, or I sip it like a liqueur until the thought dissolves in me like alcohol, infusing brain and heart and coursing through the veins to the root of each blood vessel.” -Bohumil Hrabal

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
