The school year is finally winding down to the last week or two, and most of us are ready to go home. We've been through it a thousand times by now, summer vacation. A huge feeling of relief, accompanied by warm weather and days spent lounging around with friends. Swimming, taking drives, and feeling free of responsibilities: this is what every summer has been like since we started going to school well over a decade ago. It is familiar, it is normal.
I recently had a friend tell me that they weren't excited for summer, and I believe this to be a problem. We have gotten so used to that inevitable break that some of us take it for granted. The reality is, we only have a small amount of these "kid" summers left. Even now, we all have to go home and get jobs.
After you finish school for good, summer means nothing. Our parents don't get three months off of work, they still go every day. All but a few of their responsibilities don't just fly away for weeks while they get to do whatever they want.
The last bits of childhood freedom are slipping away, and I encourage all of you college kids going home to make the most of your last few summers. Stay up past your bed time. Go see your friends for the first time in months. Take adventures, spend some of your money, and please don't take being an adult so seriously yet.
