Why I Write For Odyssey

Not just because it's super cool and fun.

Why I Write For Odyssey

I’ve been writing for Odyssey for a couple of months now and I’ve noticed some reactions from random people on social media. Once in a while I’ll see a tweet or a Facebook post saying, “Odyssey is useless; shut it down.” Seeing this often confuses me because how in the world could this site bother someone?

I started writing for Odyssey in April. The reason I applied was because I really don’t know what I want to do with my life in terms of jobs in the future or even my major right now. Being a communications major, there is a lot to choose from and I wasn’t sure what the best fit for me would be. Odyssey gave me a chance to try something new and explore the art of writing and journalism.

When I was interviewed, I told the woman I want to make my opinion known (because those of you who know me, know I have a strong opinion). I wanted to make myself have a bigger voice with the concepts and problems in the world that I am passionate about. I hate reading a news article and not being able to relate to it because it was written by some rich business man who couldn’t care any less.

Writing for Odyssey gave me a chance to speak my mind and let people actually hear it. Even if they don’t agree, my Facebook friends, Twitter followers, etc. get to see the perspective from somebody else that is relatively their age. It gives me a feel for what actually writing for a magazine feels like and to see if this is something I want to do for the rest of my life.

I am writing this today not just because for myself. I am writing this because it should be known that Odyssey writers at Quinnipiac and all over the country are intelligent, creative writers that work very hard to get their writing to be as perfect as can be. They shouldn’t have to see people hiding behind their computers saying, “this website is so stupid, stop writing.”

I can never understand why someone around this age, could be so against classmates, friends or even complete strangers, voicing their opinion on real world things. It gives students a chance to come together to be themselves and write articles that are also relevant to the world today. It’s not your basic magazine where an adult tells you about the issue, rather it’s a young adult being able to give our generation a say in political, social, economical views.

So when you see an article on Facebook, Twitter or other social media briefs, instead of asking why it’s there, maybe learn a thing or two from a voice that could be much like your own. The writers express how they feel through writing and Odyssey allows them to do just that. It allows them to be free in terms of writing and have a strong opinion of their own to let people know how, for example, a situation in the news affects them.

And if you don’t like it, then it’s your loss.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
