4 Applications Of Medical Marijuana You Never Knew Existed
CA Political Review

Medical marijuana has been a hot topic in our society for quite some time. As more and more state legislatures bring the topic of legalization to the forefront, it seems that the issue is here to stay. No matter your opinion on the subject, there are some indisputably important applications of the drug. This article is not about the moral implications of legalizing cannabis, but simply opening your eyes to some pretty cool technology. Here are some strange and interesting applications of medical marijuana that probably never crossed your mind.

1. Treating Asthma

I know this sounds counter intuitive; however, smoking marijuana will alleviate some symptoms of asthma, a disease affecting the lungs. It turns out that cannabis has characteristics that allow it to regulate dilation of the lungs and thus spasms after an asthma attack. There is not much data to support the prevention of asthma attacks.

2. Treatment of Seizure Disorders

There are several diseases that relate seizures as symptoms. Medical marijuana has led to the development of a strawberry flavored oil that has been shown to reduce seizures in it's preliminary animal studies.

3. Infused Tampons

Ladies listen up! A European company called Foria has developed a suppository tampon that is inserted for about 15 minutes and removed before the traditional tampon is inserted. This has been shown to reduce lower back pain, cramping and inflammation associated with menstruation. The treatment is designed as to not give the user a "high". These funky tampons are not approved by the FDA but they are available for purchase on the company's website: $44 for a pack of four.

4. Prevention of the Onset of Alzheimer's Disease

It has been found recently that THC, a component of marijuana could possibly slow the progression and/or onset of Alzheimer's disease by working opposite the plague buildup in the nervous system that has been known to contribute heavily to the disease. This treatment is mostly just a conceptual idea based on cellular models and has not progressed to patient trials.

As the applications of marijuana become more well-known and tested we may come into contact with these products and treatments in the coming decades.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
