I have recently started applying for law school, and let me tell you it isn't cheap. I know what you are thinking, college is expensive, everyone knows law school is really expensive. I'm not talking about the school itself though, I am talking about the application process.
Before you start applying, you must first take the LSAT. This test costs almost $200 to take, $185 to be exact. And this is just the test. Before the there are plenty of supplies that need to be purchased. Most likely you will need a prep book or some flash cards. Otherwise you may need to take the test again. Which would be another $200.
Next part of the process to apply to law school involves signing up for the Credential Referral Service (CRS). This is required to apply to most law schools. To sign up for this is another $200. It is a handy service that allows you to have all parts of your application in one place. I wouldn't mind paying the $200 fee if that was all. In addition to that, the CRS charges you $30 per school you apply to. They call this the a report fee.
But wait there's more! Each school you apply for charges anywhere from $50-$90 to apply. If you are lucky the school you are applying to may waive the fee. But not all schools will so plan on at least paying one application fee.
Last but most certainly not least, most schools will charge you a seat deposit fee of anywhere form $500-$1000. This fee is to make sure the school doesn't give the seat you earned to another applicant.
So if you are thinking of applying to law school make sure you have easy access to at least $500. That should be enough to apply to one school. Is the process really horrible? No. But when you are a broke college kid, it is pretty easy to vent about any amount of money.
