After months of speculation, Apple finally blessed the masses with the iPhone 7 and once again, my iPhone's obsolete. Thanks, Apple.. If you follow the corporation, then you know they constantly improve and update their products. For many, these updates are welcomed improvements, technology is constantly improving and it's necessary to update occasionally. However, many agree that the company updates its products too frequently. Now, don't get me wrong, I love Apple; their products are awesome. Who doesn't own at least one Apple product? But, as innovative as they are, many feel that Apple's seemingly endless updates are designed to trap consumers, I liken it to being on a hamster wheel. Apple has consumers constantly upgrading from one device to the next in an unending cycle.
When the iPhone 7 was released, I had two immediate thoughts, the first was "thank God I didn't get the 6S." The second was, "do I want the iPhone 7?" The answer to that question was no, I don't and apparently, my sentiments are shared.
According to Fortune.com, most people have no interest in buying an iPhone 7. Don Reisinger of Fortune, writes, "Just 10 percent of current smartphone owners say that they are “very likely” to buy the iPhone 7 once it hits store shelves, while 15 percent of respondents said that they are “somewhat likely” to pick up Apple’s latest handset. A whopping 50 percent of those surveyed and had at least seen, read, or heard about the new iPhone, say that are “very unlikely” to buy the iPhone 7." Interesting.
Apple unveiled the device last week during its annual Key Note press conference. Per usual, the device features new software, in the form of IOS 10, improvements in applications and design. There are numerous additional improvements to the device, most notably, water resistance, no audio jack and introduction of AirPods, wireless ear-pods that retail for $160. This particular advancement was met with harsh criticism, with many citing that AirPods just aren't necessary and are prone to be misplaced or damaged.
Reisnger notes, "The loss of a headphone jack has been criticized for being a major reason Apple might have trouble selling its handset." However, despite negative reception online, many people are looking forward to AirPods, I'm not one of those people. The AirPods, a prime example of Apple's ingenuity, on paper it sounds like an awesome idea, but in reality, we're just not there yet. In my case, this was the deciding factor, I want off of the Apple hamster wheel.
