We currently live in the age of technology. This means that mostly everyone owns at least one piece of technology like laptops, desktops, smartphones, tablets, smart watches or any other device out there. There are many companies that create these products, but I often find myself sticking with two companies, Apple and Microsoft. There are often many factors that decide what product I am going to buy including price and quality, but the most important is what I am going to be using it for.
Microsoft has always been my go-to for computer needs. When compared to a Mac, for me, the usability is better and I prefer the layout. Despite many strong opinions out there about Windows updates being confusing and ruining PCs, I have never had trouble learning how to use their new programs and figure out the changes between each update. Often the complaints I hear sound like they could be fixed by spending an hour trying to understand the problem instead of expecting it to work without learning how.
Just because I prefer PCs does not mean I don’t understand the value in Macs. My first desktop was a very old Mac desktop that my dad’s company let him buy for $25 when they were selling them. This was near the mid 2000s so I had less experience with computers by far, but this is how I learned about computers and what they could do. Despite how great this desktop was for me, after getting a PC desktop I knew that’s what I preferred to stick with.
As a college student, the thing I use my laptop for the most is school work. With much of my coursework being online including homework and tests, if I did not have a computer I could rely on, I would have a much tougher time being successful. My laptop is able to start up quickly which makes taking notes easier in class. Being familiar with the layout of Windows 10 also makes it easier to open programs and be able to complete multiple tasks at once.
Now to share why Apple is my go to company for entertainment. I have an iPhone and have always had one since I got a smartphone in 10th grade. There are Windows smartphones, but from reading reviews and hearing from friend’s experiences with these phones, I have had no reason to want to switch from my iPhone. In deciding to get the iPhone, I based my choice on my dad’s iPod Touch and how fun it had been to use. I use my phone like most people now a days--constantly. Whether I am watching Netflix or looking something up it seems to be relentlessly in use. I could have decided to switch phones at some point to try something new, but the iPhone already had everything I needed and it was never worth the gamble of trying something new.
I also used to have an iPad Mini that served mostly the same function as my phone, it was just a little bigger. Many times this served the purpose of my laptop just fine so for awhile I didn’t need any Windows products. Also the fact that apple products are all connected through their version of cloud makes it easier to stick with Apple throughout the years instead of having to start over with a new service
While I have gotten very comfortable with my technology setup and have no intentions of switching, both Apple and Windows have put an extensive array of devices to choose from out there. Everyone has their own device lineup and opinions on which is better, but at the end of the day it all comes back to each individual’s opinion on the companies.
