Throughout social media this time of year you constantly see people posting fall posts and what they are planning to do this fall. The list goes on and on including sitting out by the fire, going to the pumpkin patch, drinking pumpkin spice and, of course, apple picking!
I guess it's safe to say that I have never been apple picking, well HAD never gone apple picking. Some of my friends had explained how I "need" to go apple picking and that it is an awesome experience. The reason I haven't gone is because one, I have no friends (I'm joking because I do have friends), and two, I don't like apples. Don't freak out, because I know what you're thinking "what? You don't like apples?!" Yes I don't like a lot of things and maybe one day I will write an article about all of the foods I don't like so everyone will know.
Anyways, the youth group I help lead went to Carters Mountain Orchard in Charlottesville, Virginia. I honestly didn't have high hopes of having a good time because I don't like apples and didn't plan on picking any apples to buy, but I thought "at least I can take basic pictures."
We knew that it was prime apple picking season and that it would be busy, so, we got there early so we could try to beat the crowd. It worked, we got there safely and there were only a few handfuls of people at the orchard (I can see why because most people don't want to get up at five in the morning like I did). We walked up the mountain to where a section of the apples was, I tagged along with my cousins (who happen to be in the youth group) who were picking apples. My inner child kicked into action because I wanted to climb the trees to try to get the apples for them.
After I got an apple down that was too small to keep, they told me to eat it and I actually liked it. I guess it was small and wasn't mushy. After that, I think I ate four more apples. (Shh, you aren't supposed to eat in the orchard.)
After taking a bunch of pictures, we headed back down the mountain where the shop and bakery was, one of the other things everyone told me I had to try was their apple cider donuts. I didn't know if I would like those either because I don't like apple cider (I know and I'm sorry, I can't change my taste buds). After trying these apple cider donuts I think my heart melted because of how great they were. We also tried to use them to block out the haters and called them our donut-talk-to-me glasses.
Moral of the story is that even if you think you aren't going to like something you should still try it because it could be your favorite thing. All though it was freezing, the wind was constant, and It became busy around 10:30, I still had as awesome time! Can't wait until next year.
