Apartment V. House

My mental battle between living in a house, or sticking with my apartment

Apartment V. House
Sarah Baker

I love my little apartment, but I find myself dreaming about a house and yard all to myself. Today, I will share my brain for a bit and allow whoever chooses to read this article a preview into my overthinking, non-stop stream of consciousness.

Pro: It is small.

I don’t have to worry about the state of a basement, extra bedrooms, or cleaning any additional toilets.

Con: It is small.

I would love to have an office separate from my relaxing/sleeping space.

Pro: I don’t have to change light bulbs

The maintenance staff at my apartment complex will always fix any issue within a few days of submitting a request. The service is included in my rent. I don’t even pay for the light bulb!

Con: I don’t get to do yard work

I dream about having a flower garden, growing vegetables, and picking up the leaves in the fall. I want to shovel snow and have a deck and a fenced in yard for my pupper.

Pro: It is safe.

I don’t worry often about my car or my home being broken into. My apartment is buried inside a complex that is so well lit a robber would have to be a serious mess to attempt.

Con: It is expensive.

I pay more in rent then I would for a mortgage on any reasonably-priced, middle class home. I won’t make that money back like I would if I sold a house. It is just gone.

Pro: It is flexible.

I can up and move in a year if I need to. I don’t have to have a gigantic down payment and I don’t have to try and find someone else to live here. I can simply pick up a leave.

Con: My dog barks.

My apartment windows face the parking lot, and it is on a lower level. Every person who parks their car, slams their door, or takes their dog out gets berated by my plucky sheltie.

Pro: It is home.

Regardless of how often I daydream myself a beautiful, stylized, and perfect house of my own, this apartment is my home. I look forward to coming here, I feel comfortable and relaxed being here, and I take pride in the appearance and cleanliness of the space.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter
morethanwheels

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
