To the nervous traveler,
A lot of students study abroad and I’m sure almost all of them have experienced at least some form of nervousness. People keep asking me “Are you excited?” And of course I’m excited. I’m extremely excited! However, there is really no one word that could fully describe what I’m feeling. For me, it seems to be a mixture of anxiety, denial and excitement. A bundle of nervous energy.
For those of you who are already are considered to be a “nervous nelly” even thinking about things that could go wrong like missing your flight, not packing the right clothes or even bad weather can all impact the outcome of your trip. However, here are 6 ways to handle that pre-trip anxiety:
1. Read up on travel blogs. Besides providing tips and info they may also provide inspirational perspective and a sense that others are experiencing some similar feelings.
2. Have a game plan. Having a game plan for medical emergencies while traveling is key. Similarly, having a game plan for your taxes, mail, and other paperwork beforehand can make the trip much less stressful.
3. Keep in touch. Separation from family and friends is difficult, however, keeping in touch with them throughout your trip can ease some of the anxiety.
4. Plan ahead for last minute packing. Nothing will skyrocket your anxiety like forgetting something last minute. Be prepared and give yourself plenty of time to remember last minute items.
5. Remember how amazing your trip is going to be. There is a reason you wanted to go: remind yourself of it now.
6. You can handle it. Traveling is messy and is unlikely to go according to plan. You just have to be flexible and deal with what is thrown your way.
