An Open Letter To My Anxiety

Why anxiety might be a blessing in disguise.

An Open Letter To My Anxiety

I never used to have a problem with you, only recently have you started to give me issues. We used to be cool, only having problems when I had to present or had a big event coming up, but all of that changed during the end of my high school career. Whether applying for college and the doom of my future decided to plague me day and night, when I have repetitive dreams about failing tests, and when my stomach is in incessant knots, I know you are here. When senior year came, the reasons for my anxiety changed, yet you never left. Constant stressors from tests, graduation, prom, friends and everything else caused senior year to be even worse. This is true. However, it all got really bad when I started to have anxiety attacks. They were not normal anymore, they appear when I get mad or stressed out and I cannot breathe. But the worst is the impending doom of every single situation that I come across, or that could potentially happen. Most people assume that the situations have to be stressful ones, but literally trying to decide where to go to eat becomes a massive problem for me. I’m aggressive to people when they tell me what to do, or try to give me suggestions. I snap on them and it is because I don't know who to listen to or who's choice to decide. Loud noises make me angry and stressed out which is strange, but I swear a switch in my brain goes off and I freak out. I don't like being asked a lot of questions because it overwhelms me and I feel stressed, but people don't seem to get that. And as I sit here with bite marks on the inside of my cheeks from chewing them in every stressful situation, which generally is all day, I think to myself that maybe my anxiety is a blessing in disguise. Although my anxiety causes lots of problems in my everyday life, it does make me a better friend. With having anxiety, I know how to help my friends when they're going through anxiety problems or attacks. It makes me better able to put myself in their shoes. Another good reason is that I always make sure my friends are feeling well and happy because I know how bad it is to be stressed about literally everything every single day of your life. So anxiety, even though you cause me many problems, anxiety attacks and cause me very much stress, I think you're a blessing because you make me better understand the most important people in my life.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
