5 Reasons To Freak Out About Commuting To College This School Year

What if I miss class because of traffic or accidents on the road? Does that mean I'll have to wake up even earlier just to go to class?

I wish dorming was free, like, seriously. It would be a lot easier for college students, considering we pay a truckload of money for tuition. *UGH*

As a college student, my options are to either pay thousands for dorming OR pay hundreds for gas money just to go to school every day. Which is the better option? I'll let you decide but for me, commuting is the more fiscal option. *SIGH*

This will be my first time commuting and boy, I am not looking forward to it.

1. First of all, what am I going to do when it snows like crazy?

The roads filled with black ice and driving in cold temperatures, UM NO THANKS!! Oh, and if I'm driving back home at night in those conditions? Yeah, that's a MAJOR safety concern. You might say well yeah but you can always dorm at your friends' dorms, right? Of course, I mean my friends are kind enough to let me dorm for some nights but not EVERY night. Oh, and what if I miss class because of traffic or accidents on the road? Does that mean I'll have to wake up even earlier just to go to class? I don't know if that will be physically possible for me.

2. I guess I'm living in the library now

I've heard that the library is like a home away from home for every commuting student. How do I feel about that? Well, I guess when you don't have a dorm, anything is okay. I do think that the library would be a great place to study and just chill in between classes though. How do I feel about spending every day at the library? UMMM...

3. There goes my social life

Another thing on the topic of commuting that I'm kind of iffy about is missing out on clubs or meetings with friends because I'll have to drive home. I know that clubs are super important in the whole college experience and also very important if you're going to go to graduate school, but commuting might just ruin it for me. A lot of club meetings are held pretty late so when am I supposed to eat dinner and study and do homework? Probably never TBH.

4. Annnnnnd, there go my friends too

Will I lose a close friendship bond because I chose to commute? Dorming with your friends is WAY different than just seeing them once or twice a day. Will it seem like I'm slowly slipping away? I don't want to be THAT friend but man, I'll have to blame it on commuting.

5. Am I going to miss the college experience completely?

Everyone says that if you dorm, you experience everything there is to college. Does that mean commuting won't let me experience college as I should be experiencing it? I'll probably miss out on big events and important meetings which makes me feel super sad about commuting. Let's hope commuting will turn out to be a nice experience for me this upcoming school year. I'm really hoping that I won't regret this decision.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
